Ensign

Ensign (O-1) is the first officer rank in Starfleet and below Lieutenant JG (O-2), and is the lowest form of commissioned officer.

Ensigns are usually recent graduates of Starfleet Academy, as such, they are usually still trying to gain practical experience to add onto their book knowledge.
